Outdoor Lighting Buying Guide

Lowe’s and the Home 101 team show you how to spice up your backyard with a variety of outdoor lighting options. One of the cool things about having your own place is putting your own personal stamp on things. When it comes to lighting, there are a lot of options that go beyond the simplicity of a bare bulb. A combination of wall-mounted lights and decorative lanterns can bring warmth to any patio, porch, or deck area. Known as ambient lighting, decorative lanterns are mostly mood-setters and make a great touch for a patio party or cookout. On the other hand, some lanterns primarily exist for task lighting – a functional piece of equipment for safety or necessity. The best kind of lighting is both ambient and functional. Another cool outdoor lighting technique is uplighting. It can really make your house stand out. Use uplighting to create a wash of light, soften a space, highlight a specific feature, or create a dramatic look and feel. You can also downlight. Wall-mounted downlights have the benefit of casting pools of surface light around areas like doorways, patios, and steps. Path lighting not only illuminates the obvious areas like stairs and sidewalks – you can get creative and use them as directional lines that draw the eye to areas like your porch, patio, or landscaping. These lights can run on current electricity, or – if you’re feeling green – are also available in a variety of solar-powered options. For more outdoor lighting ideas and products, visit www.Lowes

solar garden light hack

I decided to save the solar panel on the old garden lights and make a usb charger for my I pod and mp3 player and mobile etc. I did this by saving the solar panels and binning the rest and then connecting the red to red and black to black and creating a dual polarity bridge on the wires and connecting a usb male and female cable for connection then bingo away you go a bit simple and ruff but a better version to come soon now on version 4. version 5 will be between julyand august 2009

These outdoor lighting ideas will transform your backyard into a beautiful outdoor living space with help from Carter Oosterhouse and this Creative Ideas project from Lowe’s. These ideas are inexpensive, customizable and easy to do-it-yourself. First take a walk around your yard at night and choose places that you want to illuminate. Think about pathways, gathering spots, trees, plants and architectural elements to highlight. Using lighting, you can increase visibility, create an ambiance and add drama to your backyard. Layers of Light: Start with a focal point and build out from there. This can be a place where you and guests gather. You can easily create a focal point by installing a gazebo, like the Garden Treasures Aluminum Gazebo from Lowe’s. Layer lighting in the gazebo by placing lights both high and low. Illuminate the perimeter of the gazebo with battery-operated or regular lanterns by hanging them around the outside edges of the gazebo. Add strings of mini bamboo lights overhead. Loosely string them from each post to the center of the roof. Hang a votive candle chandelier over the seating area, and finish the look off with solar cut-glass jars as a table centerpiece. Making Light Work: You can provide lighting for additional seating areas with an easy DIY project to make tube lights. Spray paint two stove pipe end caps and some metal clamps. Cut strip of textured plastic to your desired length with a utility knife. Mark where you want the clamps to go, then help
